 Scandium oxide

Scandium oxide is a chemical compound of the elements scandium and oxygen and belongs to the group of metal oxides.

Scandium oxide is a white, odorless powder and is insoluble in water. Sc2O3 has a melting point of 2485 ° C. Scandium oxide crystallizes in the cubic crystal system in space group Ia3 (space group no. 206) with the lattice parameter a = 985 pm and 16 formula units per unit cell. In the crystal structure, the Sc3 + cations are coordinated six times by oxygen in the form of octahedra. Structurally, Sc2O3 thus corresponds to the lanthanide oxides of the C-type, which also occurs in the structures of lanthanide sesquioxides of the general form Ln2O3 for Ln = Dy – Lu and Y.

Scandium (III) oxide is used, among other things, in the computer industry for doping magnetic memories. The magnetization reversal is accelerated and the computing power is increased. It is the starting product for the production of the metal scandium. It is converted into scandium (III) fluoride (ScF3) and then reduced to the metal by means of calcium.

Order Scandium (III) -oxide Sc2O3 / TREO: 99.9%.
