Samarium (III) oxide ? Strategic Elements
Samarium oxide is a chemical compound of the elements samarium and oxygen and
belongs to the group of metal oxides.
Samarium (III) oxide is an odorless, fine white-yellowish solid in powder form
that is insoluble in water. Samarium oxide is moderately soluble in strong
mineral acids and slightly hygroscopic. It occurs in a monoclinic and a cubic
crystal structure, with the cubic shape being more stable and common.
Samarium (III) oxide is used in the optics and glass industries, e.g. it is used
in infrared radiation absorbing glass. In organic chemistry, it catalyzes the
reaction of acyclic primary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. Another
application is the creation of other samarium salts and special alloys such as
Sm-Co alloy.
Samarium-cobalt magnets have a very high permanent magnetization, which is
approximately 10,000 times that of iron. Only modern neodymium magnets are
stronger. They also have a higher resistance to demagnetization and are still
stable even in temperature ranges around 700 ° C.
Order Samarium (III) -oxide Sm2O3 / TREO: 99.9%.
